I was never supposed to ask questions.
That was rule number one at my fatherโs agency. Observe, execute, move on. Curiosity was a weakness, and in our line of work, weaknesses got people killed.
But I learned that lesson the hard way.
I always had curiosities whenever I got an assignment or target to finish, but I never dared to let out even a small sigh of curiosity. Growing up in the shadows of classified files and whispered conversations, I knew better than to ask about the things I wasnโt meant to.
My dad was too busy with his work to pay any attention towards me. I never blamed him, though. He has big responsibilities of handling the agency on his own.
Infinity organization isn't some government-approved operation with neatly filed reports and strict moral codes. It is private, secretive, and powerfulโ handling everything from intelligence gathering to high-stakes negotiations, and sometimes things that didnโt fit within the bounds of the law.
I am a part of it.
Not because I had a choice, but because being my fatherโs daughter meant there were expectations. I had trained for this lifeโ sharpening my mind, strengthening my body, and burying every trace of weakness so deeply that sometimes I wondered if I ever have any left.
This morning, I entered the agency, like I do everyday. As I reached to my desk and sat down on the chair. I noticed a file on my desk, waiting for me. I picked it up and sigh.
"Another assignment." I said in a tired voice as I couldn't get enough sleep from last night, because I was working on my last assignment.
I opened the file but I barely gave a look at it. I just turned the first few pages, scanning few key informations out of habit.
Targetโ Classified.
Statusโ High-priority.
Objectiveโ Gather intel. No direct engagement.
I closed the file and put it on the desk. Another surveillance. Another faceless name. Another piece of a puzzle I wasnโt meant to solve.
I exhaled through my mouth, unimpressed. "No details, no explanation. Typical." I closed my eyes and leaned back on the chair.
The agency is rooted on secrets. Even I, the daughter of the man who built it, only knew as much as I needed to. But I always wanted to go on a real mission, to fight with the opponent, to chase the enemy, to punish them, to save the world. I repeated the sentence in my mind, "To save the world?", I chuckled at myself. Life is not a movie, these things don't happen in real life. The movies and the Hollywood has set the standards too high. Being an agent, I won't deny that we don't go on secret missions but not as dynamic as they showed on the movies.
I shook my head and snapped out of my thoughts. No matter how much I want to experience the feeling of being on a real secret mission. I had learned not to care. I did my job, got results, and stayed in my lane. That's how I survived so far.
The door of the small office cracked open, and I didnโt even need to look up to know who it was.
"New assignment?", Suhani, my best friend and work partner said, in a calm voice. She has always been with me when I needed someone. We are friends since our childhood. Because of her I am able to enjoy the most boring assignments without any problems.
"How do you know?", I said with a hint of curiosity in my voice.
Suhani walked inside, taking the chair in front of me and sat down."If it weren't the another new yet boring assignment. You wouldn't be so drained in the beginning of this wonderful day."
One of the most important thing an agent needs to learn is that no matter what the situation is, or what we are feeling. We cannot let it show on our face. We, the agents are trained to learn to always keep our emotions in check and never let the other person know what we are feeling on the inside. We are trained to keep our guards up and never let the other person get even a slightest hint about our feelings. But how can I forget that it's not the same for her. Even with my guarded expression and body language, she can clearly read me like an open book.
"You can tell, can't you? But it's not just because of this assignment. It's also because I was working on an assignment, last night." I said, keeping my voice steady and normal. But I knew that she can tell just by hearing my voice how much tired I am.
Suhani smiled at me, noticed the tiredness in my voice. But she decided to not push the matter any further.
"So, what's the assignment about?" She asked, wanting to know more about the assignment.
"Juat another surveillance. Easy. " I said, tapping the file against my desk.
Suhani chuckled at the word "Easy", and said, "Since when anything this agency has done ever been easy?"
I rolled my eyes at her, but I couldn't disagree with her either. She has a point. Even the easiest missions had turned to be a disaster.
"It's just a surveillance job. Just another job with a faceless name." I said in a mock tone. Even though I couldn't deny her words.
"It's just another job, another name." That's what I told myself.
But if I had looked closer, If I had bothered to read further, beyond the first page and looked at the person more closely. I might have realized something.
It's not just another job or another faceless name like all the other assignments I worked on before. It was the beginning of the new chapter of my life that was eagerly waiting to be opened.
